Haedo's First Victory For Team CSC

Juan José Haedo only needed three race days to get his first victory as a Team CSC rider, when he on Tuesday took advantage of great teamwork in the 186-kilometer second stage of the Tour of California from Santa Rosa to Sacramento. Haedo convincingly won the bunch sprint ahead of Luca Paolini (Liquigas) and Thor Hushovd (Crédit Agricole).

"I'm proud to have secured our team this beautiful victory and I would like to dedicate it to the two riders who crashed in yesterday's stage; David Zabriskie and Karsten Kroon. It was a tough day for us, following the crashes, but that just makes it even more satisfying to be able to come out on top the day after," said the Argentinean rider after his victory.

It was Jens Voigt, Bobby Julich and Stuart O'Grady who made sure Haedo was extremely well positioned for the sprint, which he won by a solid margin of 5-6 meters.

"I couldn't have been in a better position during the final stretch, so I more or less just had to keep up," said a modest Haedo, who continued: "From day one it's been a positive experience being on this team, so it was nice to be able to give something back to the team."

The victory came after a fairly easy stage for Team CSC, as other teams made sure to neutralize the break aways.

"We followed our tactics perfectly. In the end we moved forward, trying to keep a high pace and our riders up front, and it was nice to see “JJ”, who was in a league of his own in the sprint, which he really deserved to win," said sports director Kim Andersen.

World Champion Paolo Bettini

While the star power of the reigning world champion is one of the biggest attractions of this year's race, Italian Paolo Bettini (Quick Step-Innergetic) said through an interpreter that his desire to race was equal parts training and tourism. Bettini, who lives in a town called California on the Tuscany coast in Italy, is in the United States version of California for the first time.

"One of the nice things about cycling it that you get to see new places," Bettini said. "I don't know about my early-season form. I'm here to get ready for the big European races. My program is more or less the same, with this being the new event on my schedule. It's a long trip from Italy to California, but we're used to traveling, and I don't think it will affect my build-up to the classics. This is a great experience for me, in my life as well as a rider. I am happy to be here and I think it will be good for my early season."

Hincapie Announces Plans For Performance Training Village

There are numerous golf communities designed and built for golfers, and now there will be a Cycling and Multi-Sport Community designed and built exclusively for cyclists and endurance sport enthusiasts. For the first time in history, a 300-acre, state-of-the-art, performance-training village is planned for the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Greenville, South Carolina. The village will give cyclists and multi-sport athletes the opportunity to live and train their passion in a world-class community designed to meet their unique lifestyle needs. Pla d’Adet (pronounced PLAH-da-day) is derived from George Hincapie’s first Tour de France Stage win at Pla d'Adet, in the Pyrenees Mountains of southwest France – known to be one of the most challenging stages in the 2005 Tour and the first stage won by a teammate of Lance Armstrong since 1999.

The concept is being developed by World-renowned professional cyclist George Hincapie and Rich Hincapie, George Hincapie’s brother and President of Hincapie Sportswear, Inc. The brothers have teamed up with other Greenville, South Carolina businessmen and investors, including Ron Vergnolle and Alex Crawford, owners of PHC Communities LLC, a South Carolina-based real estate development firm and John Helmers, the principal of Swiftwater Capital Management, LP, an investment firm.

“For years I have believed that cycling and multi-sport athletes needed a World-class training facility with World-class amenities. The Hincapie Performance Training VillageSM, called Pla d’Adet, will fulfill that need and provide performance enthusiasts an opportunity to further develop their skills,” explained George Hincapie. “I’m proud to call Greenville my home. One of the reasons I chose to live here is because of the World-class riding that is in this area. Pla d’Adet will provide a convenient link to some of the World’s most challenging rides.”

The village community will be comprised of 85 1.5 to 2 acre mountain home sites, a hotel for guest lodging, conference center, restaurant, media center, and state-of-the-art fitness and training facilities called the Hincapie Performance Training VillageSM. The 35,000 square foot training village will include an exercise arena with weight training, strength and conditioning equipment, a 25-meter indoor pool, aerobic studio, group cycling studio, spa and dry sauna. Two four-mile outdoor tracks, one for cycling, the other for mountain biking and trail running, will wind throughout the village community.

The 300-acre site is located 22 miles north of Greenville, SC and 33 miles south of the Blue Ridge Parkway, in the heart of some of Hincapie’s favorite training areas. Groundbreaking ceremonies are scheduled to coincide with the USA ProCycling Championships, which will be held over the Labor Day weekend (September 1 and 2, 2007). Completion of the Hincapie Performance Training Village expected in the spring of 2008. For more information visit www.pladadet.com.

Big Hitters Coming To California

When half a dozen of the world's top professional cycling teams showed up for the start of the inaugural Amgen Tour of California in February 2006, they didn't quite know what to expect. Was this going to be an early-season event only half-heartedly contested by Tour de France riders nervous about peaking too soon? Or would the stars allow their lieutenants to race for the win while using the race as training for themselves?

In the end, the efforts made by overall winner Floyd Landis and his main challengers Dave Zabriskie, Bobby Julich, George Hincapie, Levi Leipheimer and Cadel Evans proved they could race hard in February and still peak later in the year.

That fact, along with the glowing testimonials that teams took back to Europe, encouraged three more ProTour teams - Quick Step-Innergetic of Belgium, Rabobank of the Netherlands and Liquigas of Italy - to sign up for the 2007 race. And that should make this second Tour of California even more competitive than the first.

Indeed, Quick Step is sending one of its superstars, 2006 world champ Paolo Bettini, and that means he will probably be racing to win a stage or two, not just coming to ride an exhibition on his new Specialized team bike. Also, Rabobank's Aussie sprinter Graeme Brown, who was competitive at the recent Tour of Qatar, has already laid down his intention of winning a stage or two, while Liquigas has talented riders, like Italians Vincenzo Nibali, who excel at weeklong stage races.

One sure thing about the 2007 Tour of California is that there will be a new champion. Landis, whose Phonak team has been disbanded, is currently appealing the positive drug-test result that has put his 2006 Tour de France victory on hold. In his absence, several other North Americans head the list of contenders for the California podium.

Former Gerolsteiner team leader Leipheimer, from Santa Rosa, has joined forces with South Carolina-based Hincapie as the team leader at Discovery Channel - while their teammate Tony Cruz will be shooting for a stage win in his hometown of Long Beach. The CSC squad will again be headed by top time trialists Zabriskie, from Salt Lake City, and Reno, Nevada's Julich. And the re-named Predictor-Lotto team has two California boys in its line-up: Chris Horner will be looking at the overall title while Fred Rodriguez will be eager to please his fans with a stage win. Also, we can expect Canadian Michael Barry, who finished last year's Tour of California in 16th place when riding as a team worker for Discovery, to play a bigger role for his new team, T-Mobile.

The nine domestic teams should also play a stronger role than they did last year, when Aussie Nathan O'Neill of Health Net-Maxxis was the only non-ProTour rider to finish in the top 20. Health Net has hired powerful Canadian Ryder Hesjedal to ride alongside O'Neill; Navigators Insurance now boasts Aussie Ben Day and promising Brit Kristian House as team leaders; and Team Slipstream (formerly TIAA-CREF) has added ex-ProTour rider Pat McCarty to assist fellow Americans Craig Lewis and Danny Pate.
